Turbulence is messy, unpredictable—and vital to how our world works.

At its core, turbulence is the chaotic motion of fluids like air, water, and even plasma. Unlike smooth “laminar” flow, where liquid moves in calm, parallel layers, turbulent flow is full of spinning vortices called eddies that interact, break apart, and cascade into smaller whirls.

Air screaming past a jet engine: definitely turbulent

What makes a flow turn turbulent? It’s a battle between fluid inertia (motion that wants to keep going) and viscosity (internal stickiness that resists motion). One useful measure is the Reynolds number, essentially the ratio of inertia to viscosity in the flow. When inertia dominates (high Reynolds number), the flow becomes turbulent; when viscosity dominates (low Reynolds number), it stays laminar. For example, water rushing through a river is usually turbulent, whereas thick syrup oozing slowly is laminar.

In turbulent flow, large eddies break into smaller and smaller eddies in an energy cascade. Energy passes from big swirls to tiny swirls until the smallest eddies finally get smoothed out by viscosity, which turns their motion into heat. In other words, big whirls spawn little whirls, which spawn even smaller whirls, until friction kills the motion. (As one rhyme goes: “Big whirls have little whirls... and so on to viscosity.”)

Mathematically, turbulence is extremely hard to handle. The Navier–Stokes equations for fluid motion are so complex that proving their general solutions exist is a $1 million prize problem. Turbulent flows are chaotic – tiny changes in starting conditions can grow into huge differences – so we can’t predict them exactly. Even with supercomputers, capturing every eddy from biggest to smallest is nearly impossible, so scientists rely on approximations – but a full understanding remains elusive.

Why does this matter? Turbulence is one reason weather forecasts get unreliable beyond a few days. It also affects engineering: chaotic air around airplane wings influences lift and drag; turbulent wakes behind wind turbines can steal energy from turbines downwind. And in fusion reactors, turbulence in the hot plasma causes heat loss, making it harder to sustain fusion. Mastering turbulence could lead to better forecasts, safer and more efficient planes, improved wind power, and even breakthroughs in fusion energy.

So, what triggers this chaos? It’s all about balance—between inertia, the force that keeps a fluid in motion, and viscosity, its internal stickiness. Scientists use something called the Reynolds number to measure this balance:
