When Josh Luber realized eBay’s sneaker listings were chaotic—thousands of sellers, different prices, no verification—he saw an opportunity: what if sneaker reselling had a central exchange, like the stock market?

StockX was launched as an online platform where users could buy and sell unworn, authentic sneakers, especially limited editions. Over time, resale prices fluctuated based on supply, demand, hype, and cultural buzz, just like stock prices.

Inspired by these similarities, StockX’s co-founders built a “stock market of things”—with real-time pricing, data graphs, bid/ask matching, and a strong authentication layer.

How It Works:

Buyers place bids, sellers place asks.
Once prices match, StockX handles the deal.
Every item is authenticated before reaching the buyer.
Sellers stay anonymous. No photos. No descriptions.
StockX charges a processing fee (3%) + transaction fee (up to 14.5%), which gets lower the more you sell.

Like a stock exchange, it gives a "true market price" for each sneaker based on supply and demand. You can track a sneaker’s price history like a stock chart.
