The Missionary Clamp-Down

Merchant seamen, carnival performers, motorcycle clubs, and prison gangs all adopted vivid designs as badges of brotherhood, but mainstream society read the same symbols as signs of lawlessness and moral danger.

Because respectable workplaces and the military often barred visible ink, tattooed skin became shorthand for living outside accepted rules—turning body art into a mark of defiance and, for many, outright taboo.

From the late 20th century, with rock stars and athletes flashing sleeves on TV, tattoos' reputation evolved: tattoos meant individuality more than defiance.

What began as communal ritual became outlawed expression, then fashionable self-branding.

Ethical Questions

Colonial powers first banned Indigenous tattoos as “savage,” erasing traditional patterns. Decades later, Western parlours revived the same motifs as trendy “exotic” art for white customers—sold, stripped of meaning.

The cycle started: suppress the culture, then profit from a sanitized version while original communities struggle to reclaim their heritage.
