The star of subdivisions is the midpoint. Take two points, A and B. The midpoint, M, sits exactly halfway between them.
Mathematically, you find it by taking the average:

Now imagine you find the midpoint of every line in a polygon, then connect all those midpoints together. You’ve just created more points, and your shape is already looking a little smoother. But why stop there? Do it again. And again. Each time you “split and average,” the shape gets smoother and rounder. When Pixar made Geri’s Game (a short film about an old man playing chess with himself), they needed realistic hands with natural curves and wrinkles. The first version looked blocky. So, the team used subdivision surfaces, performing the split-and-average steps dozens of times until Geri’s hands looked like real ones, with gentle folds and believable movement.

That same math now shapes every character at Pixar from Merida’s flowing dress in Brave to Sulley’s fuzzy face in Monsters, Inc.
