If you wear a famous face on your chest, you are doing more than choosing an outfit. You are sending a signal. Even if you say “it’s just fashion,” other people still read meaning into it, because symbols do not wait for permission. A political T-shirt is like a shortcut sentence: it compresses a whole story into one image and asks the world to interpret it in two seconds.

Che Guevara’s face is one of the strongest examples of this compression. The most recognizable portrait, known as Guerrillero Heroico, was taken by photographer Alberto Korda in Havana on 5 March 1960, during a memorial service for victims of the La Coubre explosion. Over time, the photo stopped functioning mainly as a document of an event and became a portable symbol that could travel across borders, languages, and political movements.

The key question for a well-rounded thinker is not “Is Che good or bad?” That question turns into a shouting match fast, because people pick different facts and rank moral priorities differently. A more precise question is: What does the image claim when it is worn, and is that claim honest? That is an ethics of representation problem, not just a history problem.

Most people who wear Che are not claiming they endorse every policy he supported. They are usually borrowing one of three meanings.

First, Che-as-resistance. Here the image stands for defiance of powerful systems, anti-imperialism, and the idea of sacrificing comfort for a cause. This meaning is attractive because it feels universal: lots of people want to be seen as someone who does not obey unjust power.

Second, Che-as-revolution. This is stronger and riskier. It frames the image as support for radical rupture, including the belief that violence can be justified to overthrow oppression. Whether you agree depends on your moral theory: do you judge actions by intentions, outcomes, rules, or historical necessity?

Third, Che-as-brand. This is the most modern meaning. “Rebellion” becomes an aesthetic: a vibe you can buy, wear, and remove. When anti-system symbols become mass merchandise, they can lose their connection to real stakes. (It is hard to feel revolutionary while participating in a retail system designed to profit from your identity.) The fact that Che-themed merchandise is widely sold and marketed shows how easily political meaning can be absorbed into consumer culture.

Here is the hardest part: the record of Che as a historical figure is contested, and the symbol can blur that contest into a single clean story. Some view him as a champion of the poor and anti-imperial struggle, while others view him as ruthless and tied to repression. A T-shirt cannot carry that entire argument. It tends to carry only the version that makes the wearer look morally stylish.

So what makes wearing the image ethical or unethical?

One approach is the Intent Rule: if you mean something good, it is fine. The problem is that social meaning does not depend only on your intent. If your shirt signals “moral purity” to others, you might be borrowing a halo you did not earn.

Another approach is the Impact Rule: if the symbol misleads or erases harm, it is wrong regardless of your intent. The risk here is becoming too harsh, because almost every historical figure becomes morally complicated under scrutiny.

A more balanced approach is the Context Rule: wearing contested icons can be defensible if the meaning is limited and honest. If your shirt is claiming “resistance and sacrifice,” you can argue that this is a real part of the symbol’s history, and you are not pretending the person was a saint. If your shirt is claiming “pure justice hero,” your symbol becomes less defensible because it smuggles in moral innocence that the record does not support.

In other words, the ethical question is not whether Che “deserves” T-shirts like a prize. The question is whether you deserve the meaning you are borrowing, and whether you are willing to be responsible for what your clothing communicates.

The Martyr Effect (and Hollywood Fuel)

Ultimately, it’s easy to romanticise martyrs, especially when they die fighting and die young. Che’s story carries an extra layer of emotional power because he became a “frozen-in-time” figure: youthful, charismatic, and permanently mid-struggle. That kind of death makes it easier for people to project their own ideals onto him, because the story ends before the compromises of old age, governance, or long-term accountability fully show. Popular culture can intensify this effect. Films like The Motorcycle Diaries help shape a version of Che that feels intimate, cinematic, and sympathetic, which can strengthen the myth even for people who don’t know the political record. The result is that the T-shirt can end up representing not Che’s history, but Che’s aura.
