Activity on the Sun’s surface creates a type of weather called space weather. But unlike clouds or rain, this weather happens in the vacuum of space—and yet it can still light up Earth’s skies. One of the most beautiful signs of space weather is the aurora, a glowing result of solar storms interacting with Earth’s magnetic shield.

The Sun is a massive nuclear engine that constantly releases energy in the form of light, heat, and particles. One constant feature is the solar wind—a stream of charged particles flowing out from the Sun’s outermost layer, the corona.

Usually, Earth’s magnetic field deflects these particles. But during intense solar activity—like solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs)—the solar wind becomes stronger and more dangerous. These storms hurl billions of tons of energized particles into space at millions of kilometers per hour.

When these particles collide with Earth’s magnetosphere, they get funneled toward the polar regions by magnetic field lines. There, in the upper atmosphere, they collide with gases like oxygen and nitrogen, releasing energy as visible light.

That light? It’s what we see as auroras—green, red, purple, and blue waves dancing across polar skies.
