Let's think about the economy like a big game, and economic indicators are like clues that help us understand how the game is going and what might happen next. But not all clues mean the same thing, so we need to sort them into different types.

The 3 Main Types of Economic Indicators

1. Leading Indicators

These are like early warning signals. They show signs before big changes happen in the economy. They help us predict what might come next.

Examples of Leading Indicators:

Stock Market Performance:
The stock market reflects how investors feel about the future of the economy.
- If stocks are going up, people feel confident.
- If they’re falling, investors might expect a slowdown or recession.
  The market often reacts before other parts of the economy do.
Lending / Credit Growth:
This tells us how much money people and businesses are borrowing.
- If people are borrowing a lot, they probably feel confident and expect to spend more (meaning there's good demand).
- If borrowing goes down, demand might be weak.
  Right now, borrowing has dropped a lot.
Capacity Utilization:
This shows how much of a factory’s machines are being used.
- If machines are running a lot, it means there’s strong demand.
- If factories are quiet, demand is weak.
  Factories haven’t been very busy lately.
Bond Yields:
This refers to the interest people earn from lending money to the government.
- When bond yields fall, it usually means people think the economy might slow down, and they want a safer place to invest their money.
- Falling bond yields can be a sign that a recession might be coming.
Housing Launches:
This tells us how many new houses are being planned or built.
- If builders are starting many new homes, it shows confidence that people will want to buy them.
- If fewer houses are being built, it means builders expect low demand.
  Right now, housing launches have also gone down.

2. Lagging Indicators

These are like looking in the rearview mirror. They change after the economy has already gone through a big shift.
They help us confirm what has already happened.

Examples of Lagging Indicators:

Unemployment Rate:
This shows how many people are looking for jobs but can’t find one.
- When the economy slows down, job losses often happen after the trouble begins.
  Right now, the unemployment rate is rising.
GDP Growth (Gross Domestic Product):
This tells us how much the economy grew by measuring all the goods and services made.
- But the data comes in later, so it shows us what already happened—not what’s next.
Corporate Earnings:
This tells us how much profit companies made.
- If companies earned more, it means demand was strong—but again, this shows past results, not the future.
Consumer Price Index (CPI):
This tracks how much prices have changed for everyday goods like food, clothes, and transport.
- If CPI is rising fast, it means inflation is high.
- If CPI is stable or low, prices aren’t rising as quickly.
  Recently, CPI has shown that inflation is moderate, meaning people aren't spending as much.

3. Coincident Indicators

These indicators show us what’s going on in the economy right now, at the same time changes are happening.

Examples of Coincident Indicators:

Manufacturing Activity:
This shows how busy factories are making products.
- If people are buying a lot, factories work more.
- If demand is low, factories slow down.
  Lately, this activity has dropped sharply.
Interest Rates:
This is the cost of borrowing money, like from banks.
- Interest rates are often adjusted to help the economy.
- If they go down, it usually means the central bank (like India’s RBI) is trying to encourage more borrowing and spending.
  Recently, interest rates have dropped to help the economy grow.

A Note About Inflation

Inflation is how fast prices are rising.
- If prices are going up quickly (high inflation), it can mean people want to buy a lot or that there’s not enough supply.
- If prices are going up slowly or staying the same (moderate/low inflation), it might mean people aren’t spending much.

Why This Matters

By keeping an eye on these different types of indicators, people in business, government, and everyday life can make better decisions—like when to invest, spend, or save.
